Monthly publication lists after 1854

Similar to Hofmeisters Monatsbericht, music publications in Denmark were reported on a monthly basis from 1854 in the periodical Dansk Boghandlertidende. Although the primary focus of the periodical was to report newly published books, it contained also a monthly report of music publications collected by Otto Hermann Delbanco (1821–1890). In 1866, the periodical changed its name to Nordisk Boghandlertidende and the monthly report of music publications continued until 1890 (from 1886 only infrequently reported). In 1897, the monthly report of music publications was resumed by Alfred Nielsen and continued until 1930. In 1915, the periodical changed its name back to Dansk Boghandlertidende. The monthly music publication report is labeled Fortegnelse over Musikalier (1854-1890) or Musikalier, udkomne i Danmark (1898-1930).

The following years are available online with a full-text search option (Hathitrust, InternetArchive, and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich):

  • Dansk Boghandlertidende (1854-1866)
  • Nordisk Boghandlertidende (1866-1915)
  • Dansk Boghandlertidende (1915-1947)

The templates DanskBoghandlertidende and NordiskBoghandlertidende can be used for work references to the monthly reports in the periodical.

Publisher catalogues

Publisher catalogues were often published with a publication year printed on the catalogue. Therefore the catalogues can be used for dating of music publications as upper bound, i.e. if a work is mentioned in the catalogue, the work was published before or in the same year of the publication year of the catalogue.

Lending library catalogues

Before public libraries started in Denmark around 1880 and later, it was common to borrow printed scores from commercially driven music lending libraries. Often music publishers in the 19th century in Denmark were also active as lending libraries and music stores, like C.C. Lose and Horneman & Erslev. Likewise publisher catalogues, the lending library catalogues were published with a publication year printed on the catalog. Therefore the catalogues can be used for dating of music publications as upper bound, i.e. if a work is mentioned in the catalogue, the work was published before or in the same year of the publication year of the catalog.

The 1875 catalogue covers publications for piano and is very detailed. Therefore, it is valuable as research source, also because it contains publications from music periodicals, which are often missing in other catalogues.

Danish newspaper archive

The national library of Denmark (Det Kgl. Bibliotek) offers an online archive of scans of old newspapers published in Denmark available at https://www2.statsbiblioteket.dk/mediestream/avis. Especially for the 18th and 19th century, this can be used to find publication announcements or advertisements as new publications were often mentioned in newspapers to inform potential buyers.

The template Template:DKBMSref can be used for work references to the archive.
