History
Hermann Thieme, born in 1770 in Wesel (Germany), came to Zutphen in 1788. Zutphen is a historic town in the East of the Netherlands, famous for the Battle of Zutphen (1586). Thieme took over his father in law's book publishing business and gave it his own name. It was sold in 1862 to Cornelis Schillemans (1840-1904), who used the name W.J. Thieme, and was successful until the end of the century. The company eventually specialized in educational books. In 2009 it moved to Amersfoort and is known as ThiemeMeulenhof. The firm's archive, going back 217 years, is in the Zutphen city archive.
