Navigation etc.

  • Although the title is The Vocal Melodies, there is no music with lyrics printed here. Several pieces are Haydn's arrangements of Scottish folksongs.
  • In Part 1, the treble clef part is labelled "violin".
  • In Part 2, the treble clef is unlabelled, and sometimes has double stops (stems in the same direction), and sometimes notes with stems opposing. The stems down part would be a 2nd violin, or perhaps the cello.
  • There is no separate bass clef part for the cello, but it is implied in the bottom line of the keyboard/harp part.
  • A few tunes have attributions: Mr. Oswald (James Oswald?); the late Mr. Oswald of Auchincruive; William Shield (credited for Auld Lang Syne)
