Discussed at length in Fifield's "The German Symphony Between Beethoven and Brahms: The Fall and Rise of a Genre", esp. pp.153 and after. (A January 20 1853 Leipzig performance is mentioned by Fifield, not the 1851 Vienna- though 1851 is given as composition date.)
