The score has the following inscription:
Du kamst, du gingst mit leiser Spur, Ein flücht’ger Gast im Erdenland; Woher? Wohin? Wir wissen nur: Aus Gottes Hand in Gottes Hand.
(You came, you went with a light trace, a fleeting guest in the land of the earth; Whence? Whither? We only know: from God's hand into God's hand.)
The source of this Johann Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862), "Auf den Tod eines Kindes" (1859)
According to the notes for the cpo recording of the work (or at least according to a review of that recording), the work is an orchestration of (or relates to) a string quartet, now lost, written to memorialize the composer's son Heinz who died in 1904 aged eight.
