Ludolf Nielsen was a passionate composer, but he also played the viola - first at the Tivoli-Orchestra and in String Quartetts, later also as a soloist. As a soloist, he was a great fan of the historically informed performance, and so he played a old viola d'amore. This Serenade was explicit composed for that instrument and he probably played that piece in some of his concerts himself.
