This aria may be regarded as a parody. Verses such as "Io me te schiaffo attuorno comme a nu cacciuttiello chino de fedeltà" (I'm going to put myself close to you like a little faithful pet) seem more humorous than sentimental. Moreover the work is dedicated to a young woman (a librettist's daughter) who probably played the first performance, since she is said a "virtuosa" in the dedication; but it's a man's love song to a woman; so probably it was sung as a parody. Surely a "serious" performance is possible, especially if sung by a man. Anyway all the other Valenza's songs collected in "La Napolitana" are undoubtedly comic.
