The subtitle, ‘Watendlath’ refers to a hamlet in the Borrowdale Valley of the Lake District in NW England. It was the fictional home of Hugh Walpole’s hero Rogue Herries in the book of the same name, a tortured, romantic hero in the tradition of Emily Bronte’s Heathcliff.
