Sometimes called his 2nd cello concerto (as on a 2012 recording of Servais' "2 cello concertos" and other works which contains opp.5, 9, 14, and "La romanesca".). According to the notes of that recording, there is a manuscript in the Royal Brussels Conservatory that allows dating of this concerto to the 1830s and which corresponds "in large measure" to the first, 1853/4 printed version. This work was used as an examination piece (Morceaux de concours) by the Conservatoire de Paris. The Conservatoire used this work in the following year(s): 1880, 1885, 1887, 1893.
