General Information

Introduction

At the beginning of 1992, the complete edition of the works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was taken over as a project of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig. It is coordinated by the Committee for Musicological Editions at the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities.

Initiated in 1959 and originally published by the International Felix Mendelssohn Society in Basel in collaboration with the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin and the Deutscher Verlag für Musik in Leipzig, the edition initially focused on the composer’s unpublished juvenile works.

As part of its redefinition into a modern, historically critical complete edition, the project now includes not only the compositions but also correspondence and other writings, as well as the composer’s artistic works (drawings and watercolors). Approximately 80 volumes of music with integrated critical reports are planned, along with about 75 volumes of letters, writings, and diaries, an as-yet undetermined number of document volumes, and a thematic-systematic catalogue of works. The volumes have been published since 1997.
