  • Many sections suit the modern viola.
  • The remark on the title page has been previously misunderstood here. "les deux suivantes à une viole de gambe et une basse continue ad libitum", does not mean that a second continuo instrument could be added 'ad lib.', but that the continuo part may be omitted entirely; the bass line is not completely independent in these sonatas, and the harmonies are well outlined in the viol part so that the bass line is not really necessary. There is no mention of a cello in either of the 18th century sources given above. A second bass instrument is required for the Vivace of the second Sonata, playing a more ornate version of the bass line. A viola da gamba would probably be the more likely candidate for this part.
