  • The title Kupała refers to the ancient Slavic holiday Kupala Night (s. Wikipedia). Its attributes (jumping over fire, fern flowers, wreaths etc.) are mentioned in the script. The figure named Kupała in the ballet is the pagan deity of love. However, modern scholars deny the existence of such a deity in the Slavic mythology (s. Wikipedia).
