This series of 15 intermediate-level studies for double bass is grounded on Richard Hofmann’s 80 melodische Studien, op. 90 for violin. Selected studies were recomposed to make them productive for and idiomatic to the double bass. A tendency toward prolixity in the original works was curbed, phrase lengths were varied, melodic contour and harmony were somewhat reworked. Some metric changes were introduced. All the expression markings were added. All the keys were changed, and some minor range adjustments were made. These double bass studies are all contained within the positions traditionally called half through fifth.
