The piece celebrates a decisive battle (also known as Sadova) in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 after which Bismarck of Prussia excluded Austria from German affairs. Following the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, the German Empire was created under Prussian leadership in 1871.
