Almost nothing is known about Winter except that he composed this mass, and died in Islington, London, on 3 January 1850. The mass in 3 parts, in C major, is dedicated to James Jauch, pastor of the German Catholic congregation in London in the 1840s. It was regularly reprinted by Novello, from the original first edition plates, and was a staple repertoire item for Catholic parish choirs in the Anglosphere into the early decades of the 20th century.
