According to the website of the Coldstream Guards, Michael Retford served with the Band of the Coldstream Guards 1879–1893, and on retirement he was commissioned by the War Office to orchestrate Regimental Marches for the British Army. Among his other arrangements for band are the first four of Elgar's
Pomp and Circumstance marches.
