Matthew Hartdegen is a South African composer, professional pianist and cellist, having worked in the Middle East, performed in Europe, and throughout South Africa. Matthew’s consistent dedication to education has seen him integrate and specialise in hyper-personalised, tailored educational experiences that bring about holistic, real-life learning experiences to the classroom through pedagogical approaches focusing on creative experience and creativity-based practices. Having taught the IB syllabus (International Baccalaureate), Canadian Curriculum (Ontario and Prince Edward Island Syllabi), Cambridge IGCSE, IEB and CAPS, Matthew believes that creativity is the key to unlocking a person’s educational journey and to maximise fully integrated learning. Matthew is booked for concerts and gigs until the end of the year. He is regularly performing across South Africa’s various multi-faceted music scenes, including genres such as Western Art Classical Music, Jazz, Pop, and various Contemporary Projects, including collaborations with R&B, Amapiano, and Soul Artists in studio and on stage.
Matthew Hartdegen is a well-recognised South African pianist tracing his pianistic lineage through Professor Joseph Stanford, Professor Ella Fourie, Ms Ilse Myburgh, and Ms Claire Armstrong. These three unique teachers imbued Matthew with a strong Russian and German School of Playing, which has aided his ability to produce colouristic soundscapes that are filled with body and depth of tone. Matthew began playing piano at 7 years old and has been awarded various music awards, scholarships, and won various competitions throughout his training and musical upbringing. Although seen as a pianist who indulges in expressive pianist qualities and deep rubato, Matthew exemplifies artistic integrity through precision and meta-narrative and meta-emotional cognition in all areas of his performances. Matthew’s natural affinity for Jazz and improvisation has been pivotal in his devout approach to harmony and timbre, where the piano is a colour and tone-painting tool used to create a myriad of effects.
Matthew is actively involved in philanthropic activities and is a Past Master and Past District Grand Organist for the District Grand Lodge of South Africa, North (UGLE). Matthew has maintained and developed extraordinarily close ties within his community and is a regular fundraiser and concert host. Matthew looks forward to developing strong connections between Freemasonry, Music, and the Community in the coming years, noting that the likes of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart found a home of philosophical understanding within Freemasonry, as Matthew has and continues to.
Matthew is a well-sought-after teacher who specialises in unique pedagogical approaches that have resoundingly pertinent success. His entire approach rests on the idea of “Hyper-Personalised and Tailored Creative Education”, which meets the student, learner, and aspiring artist where they are. With successful teaching comes the ability to develop self and teaching has become a springboard for Matthew’s personal development. The following 11 pages are in this category, out of 11 total.
