Studied at the Royal Academy of Music. Did not enter the army. Bandmaster of the Corps of Commissionaires in 1887 and Bandmaster of the Crystal Palace Military Band until 1897. Musical Director at the Spa resorts of Buxton (1897–8) and Scarborough (1899–1909).

• Son of Charles Godfrey II (1839–1919), who also published as 'Charles Godfrey Jr.'
