De Padilla was born in Spain, but moved to what is today Mexico. Since this region did not gain independence from Spain until 1821, De Padilla would not have known it by the name "Mexico"; it was the "Viceroyalty of New Spain". He lived the last 30 years of his life there, composing many choral pieces, often for two choirs.
