- Detailed biography: Probably one of Nicolas de Grigny’s forebears. Jean appears to be the most likely candidate: he is documented as Lieutenant des Violons de Reims in 1642, and later as a member of the Académie royale de danse in Paris in 1661. The Suite in Philidor’s Recueil is dated 1660, which aligns well with Jean’s known activity. Other members of the family seem less plausible. Louis (1644–1709), described as maître joueur d’instruments in 1700 and later as an organist, is possibly too old. Robert (1584–1661) is known primarily as an organist.
