Extra Information Orchestral excerpts were performed on March 7 1892 conducted by von Bülow. According to Assenov (p.490 et seq.), late 1889 was spent composing the opera for the most part, July 1890 was spent on publishing negotiations for the opera, 1891 was spent shortening and revising the opera, early 1892 on organizing performances of first orchestral excerpts (March 7 as noted) and then the premiere (April 21). References to 1892 as the "date" of the opera- that Boabdil was a 1892 opera by Moszkowski - are in accordance with a tradition by which the public premiere date of the opera gives its date to the opera (or if that leads to absurdities, perhaps its private premiere date. This tradition has still led to some situations where operas have been asserted to be associated with dates where their composer was not alive, making it clear that the dates in question are not composition dates.)

Navigation etc.

Karl Witkowski (/Wittkowski, Wittkowsky, ...) could be the painter of the same name who lived 1860–1910 (the libretto to Philipp Scharwenka's Sakuntala (ca.1885) is also attributed to the same person, in any case; also Heinrich Hofmann's opera Donna Diana, Op.75 (ca.1885).) A reference in Assenov includes a book by Wittkowsky published sometime before 1934, though how far before 1934 is not clear. Birth date 1852 from Global Museum. Friend of Liszt, met Moszkowski 1870 at Weimar, possible dates suggested have been 1852-1911?...

Mentioned as already completed in the August 1 1891 Musical Times, p.493 (composed and to be performed in the next season.) In any event, Assenov gives more detailed information.

Philipp Scharwenka arranged the vocal score for Peters (plate 7518, Klavierauszug mit text).
