Although the continuo part is figured, the title page to the Witvogel edition says "Violoncello o Basso Continuo".
The numbering of Marcello's works seems quite chaotic (leaving side the fact that the brothers Alessandro and Benedetto have frequently been mixed up). For example, this work is shown as Op.2 - but so are the 12 Recorder Sonatas. Similarly, Op.1 refers to both 6 Cello Sonatas and 12 Concerti à 5. To confuse matters further, there is a popular 'Sonata in E minor Op.2 no.2' for cello/bass and piano/continuo, published as such by Peters, International Music Company and Schirmer (and probably many others), yet neither set of Opus 2 works shown here contains a no.2 in E minor, and it actually corresponds to the work shown here as Op.1 no.2. The Schirmer book indicates that "Op.2" no.1-6 are in the keys F, E minor, A minor, G minor, C and G respectively, which correspond fully to what is shown here as Opus 1.
