The identity of F.E. Toennis is very elusive. These songs appear to be the only works referenced under that name in Worldcat. There was a German philosopher and sociologist named Ferdinand Tönnies (1855–1936) who seems unlikely to have been the author. There was also an F.E. Toennies active ca.1900-1920 in New York City as a manufacturer of soap and perfumes who also seems an unlikely candidate.
