Basse often meant cello; even in mid-Classical era string quartets it seems the title "2 violons, alto et basse" was often used on publications, and continuo was not meant, (neither was an alto (singer) meant)- 2 violins, viola, cello was intended instead, unsurprisingly. "It's a language thing..."
(It may nonetheless have been the case that the cello line was meant to be used as a continuo part, but there are no figures.)
