The piece explores treatments of a theme introduced in measure 5, and also of the supporting ground bass. The ground bass, altered, becomes the subject of the fugue.
A reasonably competent cellist is required to play, with authority, the cadenza-like solo following measure 101--or alternatively to provide her/his own cadenza.
