John Summers Cox was an Irish flutist and composer and became famous as a flutist and as a piccoloist in the United States. Cox performed in the Sousa and Gilmore bands, and it is likely that his performances defined the piccolo style of American marches. Cox is the first flutist of note to play the flute and the piccolo professionally in the United States.
