Three different melodies superimposed on the famous Bach prelude from Prelude and Fugue in C major, BWV 846, by Johann Sebastian Bach. This work was inspired by Charles Gounod’s "Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach", in which Gounod superimposed a melody over Bach’s Prelude No.1 in C major, BWV 846, from the first book of ”Das Wohltemperierte Klavier”. The melody, also known as ”Ave Maria”, fits beautifully the chord procession of the prelude and gave rise to the question whether other themes could serve the same purpose. In this work the Prelude is played three times and serves as the basis for three different theme groups: two brisk sections in C major frame a slower one in F major.
