This piece was a reworking of a vocal work (Die Schlacht vor Pavia) by Mathias Werrecore which describes the victory by Duke Sforza over the French at Bicocca in 1522. The Italian term battaglia is the translation given for the term Guerre in French, which was used in Clément Jannequin's chanson La Guerre (La bataille de Marignan), a most successful piece of the time that gave rise to many imitations.

The Aria della Battaglia is an eight-part canzona in two sections. No indication for the instruments is given in the original partbooks; a contemporary account records a performance by eight tromboni, eight viole da arco, eight grandi flauti, one strumento da penna, one lute, and voices.
