Five Movements for Small Ensemble is a moody piece that goes through different emotional landscapes. After a short introduction the first movement explodes forward, establishes what will become a recurring musical theme in the piece, and develops into rather complex and rhythmically varied lines. The second, third (played with a short pause after the second), and fourth movements, in slow, fast, and slow tempos, are less varied within themselves, and tend to progressively decrease the tension and contrast in the piece. This unwinding ends up being a sort of a trampoline for the last movement, where the music finds its perhaps true calling in a solid and driving finale.
