  1. A funny and highly chromatic galop-march, reminiscent of Shostakovich.
  2. A little minuet, senza trio, with a middle section containing lots of descending scales.
  3. A scherzino also possibly reminiscent of Shostakovich.
  4. An arietta somewhat in the style of one of Chopin's preludes.
  5. A little fanfare in 5/8 time, almost in the style of the Classical era.
  6. A moto perpetuo after Bach's Prelude in C minor from the Well-Tempered Clavier.
  7. A funny dance, perhaps something a minstrel would play.
  8. A calm, somewhat ostentatious intermezzo with some odd polyrhythms.
  9. A lively, "flying" dance in 7/8 time with a melody played in perfect fourths.
  10. A lovely waltz with a wandering melody, the start of which will be heard later.
  11. A fast-paced dance based loosely on African music, which leads directly into...
  12. A majestic chorale—though it may not follow the conventions of the Common Practice Period—with slight variation followed by a quiet coda.

This is a short suite of twelve pieces spanning all the major keys and an exercise in restrictive composition. Each piece uses only notes from middle C to the C two octaves above and is fairly short, usually 30 seconds to a minute long. Most are composed of a simple melody over accompaniment, so that the listener may hear the titular "music box" instead of just a piano. Of course, not all are so simple as that—the penultimate piece in B-flat major, as well as some of the other faster pieces, are more to show what one can write in just the span of two octaves.
